What is Body Contouring

Losing weight can offer many health benefits as well as help you feel and look better, but sometimes can leave you with extra or saggy skin in some areas of your body.

Body Contouring is a surgical procedure that will remove excess sagging fat and skin while improving the shape of the underlying support tissue. The result is a more normal appearance with smoother, more natural looking contours.

Who are ideal candidates for Body Contouring?

Adults who have undergone dramatic weight loss and are now at a point of weight stabilization are great candidates for Body Contouring. They should also be non-smokers, have a positivie outlook on life and have realistic goals for the result of the surgery.

Consultation & preparing for the surgery

When meeting with Dr. Mecham before surgery you will discuss:

  • Why you want the surgery, your expectations and desired outcome
  • Medical conditions, allergies, and treatments you’ve had
  • Current medications and other supplements you might already be taking
  • Previous surgeries

During your consultation Dr. Mecham will also:

  • Evaluate your general health status
  • Examine your body and take detailed measurements
  • Take photos for your records
  • Discuss the options you may have and a course of treatment
  • Discuss likely outcomes of body contouring surgery as well as any risks or potential complications that can happen

Prior to surgery will may be asked to get cleared for surgery by your bariatric surgeon or primary care doctor. There will also be lab tests and you may be counseled to start taking certain medications. If you are a smoker you will be asked to stop smoking.

You will also be asked to avoid taking any aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and any herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding.

The Procedure

There are several procedures that are necessary to achieve your goals with surgery. Some of those procedures may include:

  • Lower body lift: to correct sagging of the abdomen, buttocks, groin and outer thighs
  • Breast lift: to correct sagging flattened breasts
  • Arm lift: to correct sagging of the upper arms
  • Thigh light: to correct sagging of the inner, outer, and mid thigh
Step 1: Anesthesia
For your general comfort Dr. Mecham will administer intravenous sedation or general anesthesia for the duration of the surgery.
Step 2: The incision
All body contouring procedures require large incisions to remove excess skin. In many instances these incisions could be quite extensive. The length and pattern of the incisions will depend on the amount and location of the excess skin to be removed, as well as personal preference and Dr. Mecham’s skilled judgement. There are advanced techniques that can be used to place incisions in strategic locations where they can be hidden by most types of clothing, but this is determined on a case by case basis.

Recovery and Results

Following surgery, dressings or bandages will be applied to your surgical incisions. Small, thin tubes may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect.

Dr. Mecham will give you specific instructions that may include how to care for the surgical site(s) as well as prescribe medications to aid in healing and reduce potential risk for infection.

You may be counseled to avoid certain physical movements that could strain the healing tissue and prolong healthy healing.
